Who can stay at Ronald McDonald House?
Anyone who has a child under the age of 21 who is undergoing treatment at Wellington Hospital is eligible. Usually families live more than 100km away, but sometimes we can help families who live closer.
Who can use the Family Room?
The Family Room is for families with a child (aged 21 and under) at Wellington Children's Hospital.
Is the House just for families with children who have cancer?
No, the families who stay with us have children with a wide range of illnesses and medical conditions - from cancer to premature babies, to children hurt in accidents or requiring surgery.
What will it cost to stay?
Thankfully, due to our generous donors, there is no charge for families to stay at the House.
How do I book a stay?
You will need a referral from your hospital, social worker, accommodation officer or doctor. They will contact Ronald McDonald House directly to check availability.
What is provided in the rooms?
The rooms are fully furnished and sheets and towels are provided. Each room has its own private bathroom and can sleep 4-5 people.
What meals are provided?
Some food is available in the kitchen pantry for cooking and 2-4 times a week dinner is cooked by volunteers.
What do we need to bring?
Families need to bring their own personal belongings and provide their own toiletries.
How long can we stay?
Some families stay one night, others have stayed more than a year. Families are welcome while their child is being treated at Wellington Hospital.
Do you have childcare facilities ?
We welcome families bringing siblings and grandparents to stay at the House where possible. We do not provide childcare services. Children under the age of 18 cannot stay in the house unattended.
Is carparking available?
There are a limited number of car parks at the House. Further parking is available at Wellington Hospital for a small charge.
Are visitors allowed at the House?
Yes, but we ask that families have no more than 4 visitors at a time. We also ask that visitors vacate the House by 9pm or prior to the evening meal being served.
