Building Update

What a journey this has been! Five years ago, when we bought the land to build our House, we knew what our families deserved. But knowing what we had to do, and getting there, were two entirely different propositions. The road has been long and the obstacles have sometimes seemed insurmountable. But now there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Excitement is palpable. The dream of a newer, better Ronald McDonald House is now something we can almost reach out and touch. Still, we aren't there yet, and we need your support more than ever.

In April 2011, our families moved to temporary accomodation -- just down the street from our beloved old House. Up to twelve families can be accommodated; however space will continue to be at a premium. This means that the fundraising team and other non-operational office staff had to be located elsewhere. Luckily, a building became available off Hospital Road, adjoining the Wellington Regional Hospital Campus.    

Families have the use of an entire floor of our temporary House during the build, and it has become a home away from home. It’s still just a short walk to the Children’s Ward, which is the most important factor for those staying at the House.

The new House is beginning to take shape. In December 2011, the second floor was poured and the team from Mainzeal have already started building the frames and trusses on the ground floor. We expect to open our doors to families in late August 2012.
